I started this blog post last week. JP, my youngest son, turned one on the 21st of April....
It was midnight on April 20th and I began showing signs I might be in labor. An hour later, around 1am, contractions started. First 15 minutes apart, then 12, then 9, then 6. We decided we better get to the hospital quickly. We had to wait for my Dad to get to our house to watch Ethan, our then almost 2 year old son. By then my contractions were just a few minutes apart. We still had about a 35 minute drive to the hospital. We were waiting outside in our car when my dad finally pulled up. Yup - we were in a bit of a panic by then! We ran red lights and sped to the hospital. When we got back to a room at the hospital at 3:52, I was already dilated to 5cm. All I remember when we went to the delivery room, were nurses running around everywhere, poking my arms with needles, and telling me to stop pushing! Without any pain meds or epidural (trust me, I was begging for some at this point) or even a doctor in the room, JP decided he wasn't going to wait any longer! Within 3 pushes, Joseph Patrick was out. Born at 4:15am on April 21st, he weighed 7lbs 15 oz and 20.5 inches long.
It's hard to believe it's been a year since that day. As I'm sure many mothers can relate, it is a bittersweet day when your baby turns one. JP is a happy, healthy and very active little boy and we are so blessed to have him in our lives. He is the most smiley and giggly little boy I've ever seen. I promise you, I could make him smile from the time I brought him home from the hospital (I have pictures to prove it :). You could even make him laugh when he was in tears. He was in a rush to keep up with his big brother and was crawling by 4 months and taking his first steps at 9 months. He is sensitive but can hold his own against the wrath of Ethan. JP sure is clingy and we have mastered the art of synchronize walking with him holding onto my legs.
This has been one of the best years of my life and also one of the most challenging. Keeping up with 2 boys so close in age can be a tough job at times (ok most of the time)! There were a lot of times I struggled and I felt like how in the world can I do this? But, phew, we made it through the first year! My heart is so full and happy. Happy First Birthday JP!! We love you more than you will ever know!
